HLR FISHING LINES

The newly formed HLR Fishing Club held its first fishing event, a winner-take-all big bass tournament on Lake Greenbriar in December. With 30 entrants, the big bass prize pot of $360 was won by Jimmy Pollard with a 3.6 lb. catch (and release). Although

Mother Nature provided the Club with a picture perfect weather day, the bass were running scared and the number and size were short of expectations, leaving plenty of room for new records to be set at the next bass fishing event. Following the tournament, a chili dinner was hosted by Jim and Sue Mumford.

Recently, several Club members scoured nearby lakes with great success in locating winter crappie schools as shown in the pictures, for the purpose of targeting a winter fishing event. However, Mother Nature derailed the anticipated event with her exceptionally unusual deep freeze, scattering the schools and putting them into lockjaw hibernation.

Plans are underway for replacing that activity with a spring crappie “run” fishing event to be held at a nearby lake, with a “catch-of-the-day” dinner to be held in March/April, depending upon weather warm up. That event will be preceded by a “how to” meeting by the Club.

Club membership is open to all Ranch property owners. Annual (calendar year) dues which are dedicated towards defraying direct Club expenses and amenities are $50 per individual/$75 including spouse. For additional information, contact Danny Dorsey @ 613-2333.

HELP SUPPORT OUR NEW FISH ARRIVALS

(And reap the “catching” benefits)

Last November, Lake Greenbriar was stocked with 3,000 hybrid bluegills, each over 6 inches in length. Those fish, with proper food support, have the capability to put on weight of over ½ lb. per year, reaching a weight of 2-3 pounds at maturity. They are aggressive feeders and offer the opportunity for exceptional future fishing. In order to assure the growth potential for these fish, we need to support them via fish feeders located on the docks of waterfront owners, and are soliciting your support towards that end.

The HLR Fishing Club is currently researching the various feeders available and trying to secure a “group discount” on both the feeders and the recommended food. We expect that the total first year cost (feeder & food) will be in the neighborhood of $150. The Club will install the feeders AND maintain the food stocking for any participating waterfront owners on Lake Greenbriar.

By participating, not only would you be supporting theses new arrivals, but you and your family will enjoy the fun of being able to catch these meaningful fish from your very own dock.

If you are interested in learning more about supporting this effort, please contact Russ Thurau via email: russellthurau@msn.com or phone 613-2133.

May 2010

As fishing went into hibernation due to the unseasonably frigid winter, the Club heated up its activities towards enhancing Holly Lake Ranch with the undertaking of fish feeders and a new Club event center.

In the February issue of the Holly Herald, the Club solicited waterfront property owners to support the nurturing of the hybrid bluegills being stocked. With an  overwhelming positive financial response, 9 fish feeders capable of holding 100 lbs. of feed each were secured, assembled, and installed on docks on Lake Greenbriar plus 2 on Holly Lake by the Club, which will also maintain the future feeder stocking. With this feeder support to the fish population, the hybrid bluegills stocked have the genetic capability to reach 2-3 lbs. at maturity; thereby, not only providing exciting fishing opportunities but , also gourmet quality seafood.

If you’ve been by the boat ramp area on Lake Greenbriar recently, you couldn’t help but notice the newly restructured building that replaced the screened shelter.

Thanks to the “partnering” of the Ranch and the Club, whereby the Ranch provided the exterior material and the Club provided the labor and interior finish out/amenities, the HLR Fishing Club has a new “Event Center” that also significantly enhances the Ranch. Special “kudos” to Danny Ouimet, Jimmy Pollard, Randy Shoemaker, Jonathon Fuller,

George Gregerson and Steve Gowan for their hours of labor in making this facility a reality, along with the special financial donations of numerous Club members.

With the final emergence of spring, or will it be directly into summer, the Club schedule includes a pan fishing rally at nearby Lake Hawkins and lake Holbrook with a catch-of-the-day fish fry at the new event center on April 17th,  and is working towards a bass tournament on Lake Greenbriar followed by a BBQ as the next Club event.

Club membership is open to all Ranch property owners with annual dues of $50, including spouses. For additional information contact Danny Dorsey @ 613-2333.
